about

The DeAngelo Trio is a family band specializing in the music of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli.

Song Notes:

Avalon (Jolson/DeSilva/Rose, 1920) melody vaguely resembles the opening notes from a Puccini aria. Puccini sued in 1921 and was awarded $25,000 and all future royalties from the song. Puccini robbed these poor fellows.

Indifference (1942) this tune was written by two great accordionists, Joseph Colombo and Tony Murena.  In 1949 Tony Murena bought a cabaret where he was known to have hosted Django and Stephane.

Sweet Georgia Brown (Bernie/Pinkard) 1925. Bernie got the song idea after meeting Georgia state rep George Thaddeus Brown and hearing about his daughter named Georgia. However when we played this song in Carlisle in 2013, it prompted our friend Gary Shank to go get a basketball.

J'Atendrai (Olivieri) 1933. a rare video clip shows Django and Stephane together playing this tune.   Translated it means "I will wait" - a meaningful song during WWII to a generation longing to be reunited.

Django's Tiger. 1946. (Reinhardt) Django loved the 1917 dixieland classic "tiger rag," recording it at least 7 times. Here is Django’s own "tiger".

Swing 42 (Reinhardt/Grappelli) In Stephane's words..."In 1942 I was in London with Django Reinhardt and we needed 2 or 3 minutes to finish up the recording session so we improvised on the spot a little tune we called swing 42"

Bei Dir war es immer so Schon (Mackeben) translated means "With you it was always so nice."  The rest of the lyrics, like the melody, articulate the melancholy beauty of letting go.

Sheik of Araby (Snyder) 1921. Composed from the1921 silent romantic drama film "The Sheik."  The song and it's lyrics are also mentioned in the Great Gatsby

Besame Mucho (Velazquez) 1940. Translated "kiss me a lot."  Mexican songwriter Consuelo Velazquez claimed that she wrote this song having never been kissed. This song changed that in a hurry so use it to your benefit as well.

Minor Blues/Swing 48. 1935/1948 (Reinhardt) These two Django tunes written 12 years apart fit seamlessly together

I Can't Give You Anything But Love. (Mchugh/Fields) 1928 The idea for the song came from overhearing a impoverished young man's words to his lover while window shopping at Tiffany's on fifth avenue - maybe her name was Mundine?

Blues for Mundine. A tune written by our friend and Django in June guitar teacher Kamlo Barre.  Check out his version on iTunes!

Costa is an unnamed tune by the Hungarian guitarist Costa Lukacs.

Minor Swing. (Reinhardt/Grappelli) First recorded in 1937 by The Quintet of the Hot Club of France. One of Django's most covered compositions, a quintessential gypsy anthem.

Honeysuckle Rose  (Waller) 1929. Fats Waller the youngest of 11 children and a child prodigy on the keys would have appreciated our family recording of his tune. From our family to yours, this one's for you Fats!
